Whether you call it pop, soda, or soft drinks, it all amounts to the same thing - an excess of sugar that damages your teeth. A recent Gallup poll concluded that nearly half of all American adults drink soda on a daily basis, with an average intake of two and a half glasses!

Clearly, we have some work to do in helping patients better understand how this much sugar in their diets wreak havoc on dental and overall health!
But knowledge is power, and it’s always best to be informed so you know what you are dealing with. If you consume a lot of soda, you should know that a single cola drink has a little over nine teaspoons of sugar. That should make you think twice about your sugary habit!
If you still aren’t convinced, give yourself a visual. Multiply nine teaspoons of sugar by the number of sodas you drink daily. Then place that amount in a small bowl and decide if you really want all that that sugar in your body!
How Sugar Damages Your Teeth
Your teeth harbor thousands of bacteria, even with good oral hygiene. These bacteria love to feed on the sugars in your mouth. As they break down the sugar, they create acid as a byproduct. It’s the sugar that starts the chain reaction, but it’s the acid that attacks dental enamel and creates cavities.
You must brush and floss at least twice a day to stop the sugar/acid cycle. You don’t have to brush immediately after consuming sugar; in fact, you can damage your dental enamel by brushing too soon. So wait an hour to brush, and in the meanwhile, you can rinse your mouth to get rid of some of the sugar that sits on your teeth.
