Did you know that children should see their dentist every six months just like their parents? It's true! And since February is National Children's Dental Health Month, we want to take some time to discuss everything you need to know about your little one's dental health.

When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

The ADA, American Dental Association, and the AAPD, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both agree that children should have their first dental appointment by age one. Even though this may seem early, we want to encourage building positive relationships with our youngest patients and help them acclimate to dental visits. Early visits also help our dentists monitor their dental development so we can let parents know if there's anything to be concerned about.

Why Are Baby Teeth Important?

Parents sometimes wonder why it's so important to take care of baby teeth when they're going to fall out in the long run. This is a great question!

Primary (baby) teeth actually have several important jobs to do before they fall out around the age of six.

  • They save space for incoming adult teeth and guide them into the right position
  • They help your baby say their first word and learn to speak
  • They introduce your little one to the joy of solid foods

If your child loses a baby tooth too soon, it may impact incoming teeth or other aspects of their oral development.

When Should My Child Have Their First Orthodontic Evaluation?

This may surprise you, but the AAO, American Academy of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. This is because some children can benefit from interceptive orthodontic treatment that helps them overcome problems like crowded teeth and bite concerns when they're growing and it's easier.

Not every child will need early intervention, and those that don't can start their orthodontic treatment around age 12 if it's needed.
