At the office of Bruce E. Matthews, DDS, we try to convey the importance of a good oral hygiene routine to patients at every visit to our Wilmington dental office. A good oral hygiene routine can help you save time and money on dental care in our office by keeping your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

1. Dedicated Tooth Brushing

Dedicated tooth brushing means you brush your teeth at least twice every single day, and you spend at least 2 minutes brushing your teeth per session.

2. A Daily Flossing Habit

Good oral hygiene also includes daily flossing. Generally, we recommend flossing at night instead of in the morning because it’s important to remove plaque and food particles before you go to sleep.

3. Regular Dental Visits for Exams and Dental Cleanings

You will not be able to achieve good oral hygiene all on your own. Professional dental cleanings are necessary for any effective oral hygiene routine. Our tools and training allow us to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth that is impossible to remove with at-home care. We usually recommend dental cleanings in our office at least twice a year. However, we may recommend more frequent visits if you have oral health issues that you need help correcting.

If you follow the guidelines above, you should enjoy ideal oral health. Remember, however, that it is important not only to brush and floss but to do both activities correctly. When brushing your teeth, you should brush gently but thoroughly, covering every tooth surface.

When flossing, you should also take your time, reaching all the nooks and crannies. You may feel tempted to rush through your oral hygiene routine but that limits its effectiveness.

Additional Treatments for Good Oral Health

In our Wilmington dental office, we often recommend dental care in our office, in addition to your at-home care routine, to promote good oral health and prevent cavities, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants. If we recommend additional treatment to you, we will discuss the reason and the procedure with you before proceeding with a treatment plan.
