Dentistry, like other medical and scientific professions, constantly strives to improve patient outcomes and provide better results for those people we treat. Over the past decade, dental implants have come a long way – better integration, success rates, and techniques. Dental implant success rates are high. According to the Journal of Dental Implantology, success rates are near 100 percent, when no other oral health conditions or lifestyle limitations exist and proper healing time occurs before dental implants become an active part of the chewing system.
With patients who smoke or who suffer from periodontal disease, however, success rates can suffer. A new dental implant technology uses an antibiotic reservoir to release medication that assists with healing. While this process is not yet widely used, it is an example of research and science guiding the dental and oral surgery field to open the doors for patients to receive dental implants successfully when it was not previously possible.
Dr. Bruce Matthews offers the dental implant as an option for replacing missing teeth in our Wilmington dental office. He is skilled and experienced in both the surgical and restorative phases of treatment.
When seeking dental implant treatment, we will first perform a comprehensive dental exam to determine if you have sufficient bone density to support your dental implant.
Treatment typically consists of three separate phases:
Surgery – May or may not include bone grafting, depending on your unique needs.
Healing – Dental implants integrate with your bone and need time to heal. This process can take 3-4 months – longer if you smoke.
Restoration – Dr. Matthews creates a custom dental implant crown to complete your smile. Each crown is meticulously designed to fit perfectly and look completely natural.
Dental implants require very little maintenance beyond how you care for your natural teeth, making them one of the most convenient and reliable ways to replace missing teeth.
Most patients tolerate dental implant surgery well and Dr. Matthews has extensive experience restoring the function and beauty of our patients’ smiles.
